US President Donald Trump has admitted the possibility of a ground operation in Iran. In an interview with The New York Post, he stated that he is not afraid of such a scenario, unlike his predecessors.
"I have no fear whatsoever about sending troops. Other presidents say in such cases, 'Our troops won't be there.' But I'm not saying that. I'm saying that troops on the ground probably won't be needed," the head of state noted.
Later, in his address to the nation, Donald Trump clarified that the military operation against Iran was initially planned for four to five weeks, but the United States was prepared to continue it for significantly longer if necessary. Commenting on reports that he might become "bored" with the war in a week or two, the US President stated: "I'm never bored."
According to him, the elimination of Iran's military leadership, according to the original plan, was supposed to take about a month, but, as Trump noted, it was "done in about an hour," and the United States, according to him, is "ahead of schedule."
The American leader called the operation against Iran "the last and best chance" to eliminate the threat posed by a "sick and sinister regime." He also outlined Washington's primary goals: destroying Iran's missile capabilities and the republic's navy. According to Trump, the US has destroyed 10 Iranian ships, and they "lie at the bottom of the sea."
The US-Israeli operation began on the morning of February 28 after the collapse of negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. The US-Israeli strikes killed key members of the Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Mohammad Pakpour, his adviser Ali Shamkhani, Chief of the General Staff Abdulrahim Mousavi, and Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh. Ali Khamenei's wife also died later.
In retaliation, Tehran has launched strikes against American bases in Washington's Middle East allies, as well as civilian targets. Targets in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia have been targeted, among others.
