On March 4, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity reported a complete power outage in all provinces of the country.
The department explained that the blackout was caused by a technical malfunction caused by a sudden drop in the required gas supply at the Rumaila power plant in Basra province. This power plant is a key component of Iraq's energy system.
According to the ministry, the plant's capacity dropped sharply by 1,900 megawatts, which led to a massive power outage across the country.
Judging by videos filmed by eyewitnesses and published on social media, some houses still have electricity, but street lighting is completely out.
Repairs are reportedly underway at power plants and transmission lines. The Iraqi news agency INA notes that these facilities have been repeatedly attacked by Iran recently.
The incident occurred on the fifth day of the US-Israel war against Iran. On the morning of February 28, both countries began launching airstrikes on Iranian territory. US President Donald Trump declared his intention to destroy the Islamic Republic's nuclear program and called on the Iranian army to lay down its arms and the country's citizens to take their fate into their own hands.
According to Iranian state media, citing information from the Iranian Red Crescent Society on March 3, at least 787 people were killed in the strikes.
Iran retaliated by striking Israel and several Gulf states, which also suffered casualties. Tehran claims it is not waging war on Arab countries, but is instead targeting US military bases in the region.
