In Russia, 88% of films produced with state support will fail to recoup their costs at the box office by 2025, according to Gazeta.ru, citing an analysis by the KG PROGRESS Research Center based on data from the Cinema Fund, the Russian Ministry of Culture, the Unified Federal Automated Information System for Film Screenings in Cinemas, and the Kinopoisk service.
According to the data presented, only five of the 41 films produced with state support made money. The previous year, the situation was similar: 18 of the 23 films produced with state funding failed to make money, representing a 78 percent loss.
The most profitable film with state support was "The Wizard of the Emerald City: The Yellow Brick Road," based on the first installment of Alexander Volkov's fairy tale series. Released in 2025, the film earned 1.39 billion rubles. "The Prophet: The Story of Alexander Pushkin" also proved profitable, earning approximately 37 million rubles over and above its costs.
The most unprofitable film was "Evil City," which incurred losses of over 1.86 billion rubles. Six other state-sponsored films were among the most unprofitable, posting losses exceeding 1 billion rubles. These included "Letter to Santa Claus," "Not on the Lists," "Rodnina," "North Pole," "First on Olympus," and "Kraken."
It is noted that a particularly large sum of 760 million rubles was allocated from the state budget for the production of the film "Kraken."
