US spending on the current military campaign against Iran could exceed $1 trillion if the fighting drags on, The Intercept reports, citing expert estimates and military spending data.
According to the publication, budget expenditures in the first two weeks of the operation alone have already reached $12 billion. Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, confirmed that the US has spent approximately $12 billion since the start of the joint strikes on Iran with Israel.
It is noted that the projected $1 trillion figure is based on calculations assuming the military operation enters a protracted phase. Such a phase may require not only continued intensive missile strikes but also possible ground intervention and subsequent stabilization of the region.
Analysts emphasize that if the current intensity of strikes and the need to replenish stockpiles of expensive missiles continue, the total costs could become comparable to the multi-year US expenditures on military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.
