Tajikistan has toughened penalties for snow leopard hunting. These crimes now carry harsher penalties, including substantial fines and prison terms of up to eight years.
According to amendments to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan, Article 232¹ has been amended and is now titled: "Hunting, intentional killing, as well as illegal acquisition, storage, transfer, or sale of snow leopards (Central Asian leopards)." Previously, the article was titled "Hunting and intentional killing of snow leopards."
The updated version provides for a fine of 1,200 to 1,800 calculated units or imprisonment for up to three years for these offenses. Previously, the penalties included a fine of 800 to 1,200 calculated units, correctional labor for up to two years, or imprisonment for up to three years.
Repeated commission of these acts now entails a fine of 2,000 to 3,000 calculated indicators (previously – from 1,500 to 2,000) or imprisonment for a term of four to eight years (previously – from three to five years) with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of up to five years.
In addition, Article 236 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan, “Violation of the regime of specially protected natural areas and objects,” has been amended, according to which the threshold for particularly large-scale damage has been increased from 300 to 500 calculated indicators.
