On July 31, interagency consultations between Tajikistan and Russia were held in Dushanbe to discuss biological security threats in the post-Soviet space, TASS reported, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The Russian delegation was led by Konstantin Vorontsov, Deputy Director of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control, and the Tajik delegation was led by Amir Amirzoda, Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
"An exchange of assessments of biological security threats in the post-Soviet space was conducted. The implementation of the bilateral intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding on biological security, including specific areas for further cooperation, was discussed," the statement reads. "Issues of optimizing and increasing the effectiveness of the implementation of the document's goals and provisions by establishing an appropriate consultative mechanism were considered."
The meeting also confirmed Russia and Tajikistan's shared approaches to biological security. "The need for further close coordination was noted, both bilaterally and at relevant multilateral forums, primarily within the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention, the CSTO, the CIS, and the SCO," the Russian diplomatic mission emphasized.
