On August 2, the water ministers of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan conducted a joint working visit to Tajikistan's Sughd region, during which they inspected the operations of several strategically important water infrastructure facilities, according to the press center of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The working visit was attended by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, Daler Juma, the Minister of Water Resources of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Khamraev, and the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
The heads of departments visited the Somgar-1 and Khodjabakirgan-1 pumping stations in the Bobojon Gafurov district, as well as the Markham station in the city of Konibodom. These facilities, built between the 1950s and 1970s, still play an important role in providing water to agricultural lands in border areas.
"Despite decades of service, the pumping stations continue to function, but the equipment requires urgent modernization," it was noted during an inspection of the facilities.
In addition to technical deterioration, one of the remaining problems is high energy consumption, which exceeds regulatory standards, reducing the efficiency of the facilities.
The joint visit was part of efforts to strengthen trilateral cooperation in water management and irrigation. The parties discussed ways to modernize pumping infrastructure, attract international investment, and share best practices in sustainable water management.
According to the meeting participants, modernizing outdated facilities and implementing energy-efficient technologies will help reduce water and electricity losses, as well as ensure a stable water supply in the face of climate change and growing demand for irrigation resources.
