National cinema of Tajikistan continues to develop dynamically within the framework of the Cinema Development Program for 2023–2027 and its implementation plan for 2023–2025. Based on the results of the pitching held in early 2025, 16 films out of 22 proposed projects were recommended for production: 6 full-length feature films, 7 documentaries, 1 animated film, as well as 2 projects at the approval stage.
Feature films currently in production include the historical and patriotic drama Fish for Comrade Churchill (directed by Nigina Radzhabova), dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II; Red Dream (directed by Sohiberi Tolib) about a former soldier suffering from a mental disorder after serving in Afghanistan; the film Path of Wrath, a joint project with Russian filmmakers, currently in post-production. The joint film Fish on the Hook by Tajikistan, Russia and Iran has been completed and is being prepared for screening.
In addition, as part of international cooperation, work is underway on the historical film "Shine of the Stars: Jami and Navoi" in partnership with Uzbekistan. Filming will begin on August 1 and will last until the end of September. 1,500 units of props, 750 costumes, including 400 robes, and more than 300 headdresses have already been prepared.
Among the documentaries are biographical and historical-cultural projects: “Hafiz Shirazi – the connecting link of civilizations”, “Abuali ibn Sino”, “Hero of Tajikistan Bobojon Gafurov”, “Khujand Fortress”, as well as the film “Water Nest”, dedicated to the preservation of glaciers, which is currently in the filming stage.
Animated cinema is represented by the project "Nakhudak" (directed by Nasrullozoda Firdavs) based on Tajik folk tales. Its second part will be completed in the second half of the year.
Tajik cinema actively participates in international festivals. In June 2025, the film "In Search of Truth" (directed by Manzarli Sherali) received the "Best Screenplay" prize at the Eurasian Film Festival and a diploma at the film forum in Bishkek. In July, the film was awarded a special prize by the SCO jury in Chongqing, China. Another film, "Life is Beautiful" (directed by Daler Rakhmatov), was awarded a special jury prize and a cash prize in India.
In October 2025, the II International Film Festival "Tajiks Somon" will be held in Dushanbe under the slogan "History of Tajik Development". The festival will include Days of Foreign Cinema, master classes, a film forum for the 60th anniversary of director Bakhtiyar Khudoynazarov, as well as a meeting of the Board of Directors of CIS film studios.
By the 35th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Tajikistan, new modern cinemas will be put into operation: Sitora and Orlyonok in Dushanbe, Khiloli in Vahdat, Bahor in the Rudaki district. All facilities are equipped with digital projection systems.
Also in 2025, the Mukhabbat Sattor School of Young Filmmakers was opened. The training program includes a three-month theoretical course and a two-month practical course.
