Microsoft has announced plans to cut up to 4% of its total workforce, or about 9,000 people, Kazinform reports, citing CNN.
This is the company's largest staff reduction since 2023, when about 10,000 employees were laid off.
In an official statement, a Microsoft representative noted:
“We continue to implement the organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams to succeed in a dynamic marketplace.”
The company intends to reduce management levels and increase employee productivity through the implementation of new technologies.
The layoffs come as Microsoft is increasingly embracing artificial intelligence in its workflows. CEO Satya Nadella has previously said that 20% to 30% of software code is already generated using AI, and the company is investing billions of dollars in developing AI infrastructure.
It is not yet clear exactly how much the use of AI has impacted the current layoffs and which departments will be affected.
It is worth noting that in May of this year, Microsoft already laid off about 7 thousand employees.
In addition to Microsoft, other tech giants such as Meta and Bumble have announced massive layoffs. Meta plans to cut about 5% of its workforce as part of an accelerated layoff of its least effective workers.
