Tajik judokas Emomali Nurali and Obid Dzhebov won silver and bronze medals at the World Judo Championships held in the capital of Hungary. This was reported by the Judo Federation of Tajikistan.
In the weight category up to 66 kg, two representatives of the national team took to the tatami – Emomali Nurali, the leader of the world ranking, and Obid Dzhebov. Both began the competition from the second round, where they confidently won and advanced to the 1/8 finals.
Emomali Nurali won consecutively against Spaniard Nieto Chinar, Georgian Vazha Margvelashvili and Kazakhstani Gusman Kirgizbaev. In the semi-finals, he again met his compatriot Obid Dzhebov, repeating the result of the recent Dushanbe Grand Slam tournament – the victory went to Nurali.
In the final fight, Emomali Nurali fought against Japanese Takeoka Takeshi. Despite his confident performance, he lost to his opponent, becoming the first vice-champion of the world in judo in the history of Tajikistan.
Obid Dzhebov, in turn, became one of the main discoveries of the tournament. He sensationally defeated two-time Olympic champion and four-time world champion Hifumi Abe from Japan. In the fight for the bronze medal, Dzhebov defeated Walid Khiyar and won his first medal at the world championships. This is the third bronze award in the history of Tajik judo after the successes of Rasul Boqiev (2007) and Somon Makhmadbekov (2024).
The participation of two Tajik wrestlers in the final was a unique achievement and a symbol of the rapid growth of the national judo school.
