The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution establishing World Horse Day, which will be celebrated annually on July 11. The resolution, co-sponsored by Mongolia and several other countries, including Kyrgyzstan, was supported by 169 delegations. Only the United States voted against, the UN press service reported.
There are currently more than 57 million horses in the world. The authors of the resolution emphasize that in many countries horse breeding is of great importance for socio-economic development and human well-being.
Activities such as horse riding, transportation, racing, equestrian sports and tourism contribute to the economic empowerment of rural people and local communities. They contribute to job creation, food production and other economic activities.
The General Assembly agreed that worldwide the number of horses and the size of the equestrian industry are declining due to changing lifestyles, pressures on the industry due to economic fluctuations, climate change, environmental and other factors.
Delegations supporting the resolution believe that the proclamation of World Horse Day will provide the international community with a global platform to raise awareness of the important role of the equestrian industry in sustainable agricultural development.
