Over 1.7 tons of drugs were seized during the CSTO sub-regional anti-drug operation "Channel-Gorny Outpost", which took place on 18-23 May on the territory of the CSTO member states, the organization's press service told BELTA.
"As a result of the joint measures taken, 636 drug-related crimes were identified, including 13 cases of smuggling, and 103 drug gangs were exposed. Four cases of drug money laundering were registered and 47 offenses were identified. 405 individuals were detained for drug-related crimes. According to preliminary data, more than 1,742 kg of narcotics, psychotropic and potent substances were seized from illegal circulation during the operation; of which over 350 kg of marijuana, over 188 kg of hashish, 298 kg of opium, over 832 kg of mephedrone, 31 kg of heroin and 341 kg of precursors," the CSTO said.
In addition, 955 Internet sites were identified through which illegal information about drugs was distributed. 34 units of firearms and more than 1,300 rounds of ammunition were confiscated, and more than 460 wanted persons were detained.
The operation involved over 17,000 employees of law enforcement agencies, border and customs services, state security agencies, financial intelligence units of the CSTO member states, as well as observers – employees of law enforcement agencies of Iran and China, representatives of the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism, the Committee of Heads of Law Enforcement Units of the Council of Heads of Customs Services of the CIS Member States, and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
