Strong dust storms are possible in Tajikistan from May 8 to 10 – be careful!

The Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan (CES) cites data from the Hydrometeorology Agency and warns of adverse weather conditions expected in the country from May 8 to 10, 2025. Dust and sand storms are forecast throughout Tajikistan during these days.

According to the forecast, wind speeds may reach 15-20 m/s between May 8 and 10. This will lead to a significant increase in the concentration of dust and suspended particles in the atmosphere, which may pose a serious threat to health. Of particular concern are PM2.5 and PM10 particles, the concentration of which may significantly exceed permissible levels. These microscopic particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory tract, which poses a danger to people with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as to children and the elderly.

What is PM2.5 and PM10?

• PM2.5 are fine particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns. These particles can penetrate the lungs and threaten not only the respiratory system, but also the cardiovascular system.
• PM10 – particles up to 10 microns in diameter that can cause breathing problems, especially in people with chronic medical conditions.

Recommendations for residents of Tajikistan during dust storms:

1. Drink plenty of water – at least 2-2.5 liters per day, including mineral water.
2. Keep windows tightly closed, especially in the morning when the concentration of harmful particles in the air is particularly high.
3. Cover windows with damp gauze or cloth and keep them damp to reduce dust penetration.
4. Perform wet cleaning in the premises, especially on windows and floors.
5. Avoid wearing contact lenses during dust storm days.

For people with respiratory diseases:

• Do not change the dosage of your medications.
• Always carry your inhalers with you.
• If you need to use inhalers more than 4-6 times a day, consult a doctor.
