The Trump administration has notified Congress of its intention to authorize the export of military products to Ukraine through the Direct Commercial Sales (DCS) mechanism in excess of $50 million, the Kyiv Post reported, citing diplomatic sources. The deal involves the supply of military goods, technical data, and related services to Ukraine. This decision followed shortly after President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to purchase air defense systems and weapons from the United States worth $30-50 billion as part of long-term security guarantees.
The authorization is the first of its kind since Donald Trump returned to the White House, and comes just weeks after the administration suspended all military aid to Ukraine to refocus on a diplomatic resolution to the conflict rather than continued military pressure.
Before that, in the latest aid package to Ukraine, Congress approved more than $1 billion in arms sales through DCS. Under the previous administration of Joe Biden, some of those supplies were used to transfer critically needed weapons to the country, including fully automatic heavy machine guns.
From 2015 to 2023, the United States tacitly authorized more than $1.6 billion in defense exports through the DCS mechanism.
