The crew of the Artemis 2 manned mission has begun its return to Earth. NASA announced this on the evening of Wednesday, April 6.
"At 9:35 p.m. ET, the Artemis 2 crew completed their lunar observations and are now beginning their return journey home," the statement said.
Astronaut Christina Koch announced during a NASA broadcast that the Artemis II crew had successfully orbited the Moon and set a new record for the longest human stay in space.
It is noted that previously the astronauts had traveled 407,000 kilometers from Earth, thereby breaking the record set during the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.
The Orion spacecraft launched on April 1 from the US East Coast. On board are NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, as well as Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
The crew was scheduled to orbit Earth's natural satellite and return. During the mission, the participants also tested new spacesuits capable of providing up to six days of autonomous breathing.
