Israeli airstrikes on Nasser Hospital in the Gaza Strip killed 20 people, including five journalists. Another 50 were injured, including seriously ill patients undergoing treatment, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that ongoing attacks on medical facilities are exacerbating the health situation, which already severely limits access to healthcare in the Gaza Strip. "We must be absolutely clear: Stop the attacks on medical facilities! Ceasefire now," he said.
According to the WHO, the strikes hit the hospital's main building, which houses the emergency department, inpatient department, and surgical ward.
Commenting on the tragedy, Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), noted that attempts to silence journalists reporting on the deaths of children and the humanitarian crisis shock the international community. He called for unimpeded access for humanitarian aid and the protection of journalists, medical workers, and humanitarian aid workers.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the airstrikes, calling for a prompt and impartial investigation. "These horrific killings highlight the extraordinary risks faced by medical personnel and journalists as they carry out their vital work in conflict," UN Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement.
Guterres reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access throughout the Gaza Strip, and the release of all hostages.
