The Council of Commanders of the Border Troops has been the body of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS for more than three decades on issues of protecting the external borders of member states and ensuring a stable situation on them, the press service of the Executive Committee of the Organization reports.
In making the decision on July 6, 1992, to establish the Council of Commanders of Border Troops, the Council of Heads of State of the CIS proceeded from the need to coordinate activities to strengthen and reliably protect the external borders of the CIS member states, as well as to further search for new forms of interaction between the border troops of the Commonwealth countries.
The past years have proven the correctness of this decision. The result of the consistent work of the Council of Commanders is the unprecedented level of trust achieved today between the border agencies, which allows for the organization of effective cooperation in the fight against international terrorism, cross-border crime, illegal migration, and drug trafficking. This is achieved, among other things, by conducting joint special border operations, joint command and staff exercises, and training.
Over the years, the Council of Commanders of the Border Troops has established close partnerships with international and regional organizations operating in the field of security, which allows for the coordination and consolidation of the actions of the Commonwealth states to counter challenges and threats that contribute to the destabilization of the situation near their external borders.
No less important is the presence of a unified approach of the heads and employees of the border agencies of the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States to the issues of preserving the traditions of the border service, the memory of the feat of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, and honoring veteran border guards.
