On July 1, 2025, the CIS Executive Committee Branch held a meeting of the expert group of the CIS member states to agree on the draft Main Areas of Cooperation of the CIS Member States in the Field of Management of Radioactive Waste, Spent Nuclear Fuel and Decommissioning of Nuclear and Radiation Hazardous Facilities for the Period up to 2030, the press service of the CIS Executive Committee reported.
The event was attended by representatives of the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as the CIS Executive Committee.
The draft Guidelines were developed by the basic organization of the CIS member states on issues of handling spent nuclear fuel, radioactive waste and decommissioning of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities – JSC TVEL.
The document is aimed at resolving issues related to ensuring nuclear and environmental safety, implementing specific projects to render radiation-hazardous facilities safe, and creating conditions for the development of national nuclear energy.
The meeting participants reviewed the proposals presented and, after detailed discussions, agreed on the draft Guidelines.
The document is expected to be submitted for consideration to the CIS Economic Council in accordance with the established procedure.
