From 2007 to the beginning of the second quarter of this year, China has invested $5.1 billion in the economy of Tajikistan. This was reported by the Chairman of the State Committee on Investments and State Property Management of the Republic, Sulton Rahimzoda, at a meeting of the lower house of parliament, where the Agreement on Mutual Encouragement and Protection of Investments between the Governments of Tajikistan and China was considered, writes the newspaper “Sadoi Mardum”.
According to him, about $2.9 billion, or 57.4% of the total amount, are direct investments. The remaining $2.2 billion (42.6%) are other investments.
PRC investments are directed mainly to such sectors as the extractive and manufacturing industries, geological exploration, light industry, communications, construction and installation of equipment. Currently, over 700 companies with Chinese capital operate in the republic.
The agreement on mutual promotion and protection of investments between the governments of the two countries was signed on June 5, 2024, following the Tajik-Chinese high-level talks in Dushanbe. The document is designed for 15 years.
China has become a major investor in Tajikistan, beginning active capital investments in the second half of the 2000s.
