Canada, Britain and France issued a stern warning to Israel, threatening sanctions if it continues its military operation in the Gaza Strip and further curbs on humanitarian aid, according to a joint statement released on May 20.
"We strongly oppose the expansion of Israeli military operations in Gaza. The level of human suffering in the region is unbearable. Statements about allowing limited humanitarian aid are completely insufficient," the document emphasizes.
The authors of the statement called on Israel to immediately cease military actions and ensure unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, including in coordination with the UN. In addition, they condemned statements by certain Israeli politicians about the possible resettlement of Palestinians, recalling that forced displacement of population contradicts the norms of international humanitarian law.
Earlier, the Israeli army announced the start of the first stage of a new large-scale operation in Gaza called "Gideon's Chariot".
