Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are strengthening cooperation in the field of environmental protection, NIAT Khovar reports with reference to the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.
On July 8, during the high-level talks between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, in the presence and with the participation of the heads of state Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Japarov, a ceremony of signing new documents on cooperation was held. In particular, a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development was signed between the Committee for Environmental Protection under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The document is aimed at implementing joint projects on climate change, water pollution and biodiversity conservation. It provides for the exchange of experience and technologies, as well as joint research and initiatives to improve the environmental situation in the region.
At the same time, within the framework of the Memorandum, joint research expeditions will be conducted to study biodiversity in border areas, joint monitoring of wildlife in border areas, the development of specially protected border natural areas, including the identification of possible migration corridors for the conservation of rare species of flora and fauna.
Bilateral projects on adaptation to climate change will also be developed and implemented.
Along with this, within the framework of this document, the parties strengthen cooperation in the direction of introducing “green” technologies, preserving biodiversity, sustainable management of specially protected natural areas and other priority ecological zones, strengthening the human resources of specialists in the field of environmental protection, developing transboundary ecotourism and creating tourism and recreational infrastructure in mountain landscapes.
Within the framework of this document, the two neighboring countries will conduct joint research on the ecosystems of the snow leopard and its hunting in the agreed territories of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic. Joint research expeditions to study glaciers, seminars and conferences, as well as joint trainings to improve the qualifications of specialists in the field of environmental protection will also be organized and conducted, joint educational programs for the population will be developed and implemented, aimed at increasing environmental culture and education.
