The US Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency John Brennan and former head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation James Comey, Fox News reported, citing sources in the US Department of Justice.
According to the channel, the investigation concerns possible violations committed during the investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible ties between Donald Trump's campaign headquarters and Moscow. Investigators intend to find out whether Brennan and Comey could have given false testimony.
On July 3, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency released an internal report indicating that the intelligence agency's report on Russian interference in the 2016 election was prepared in violation of established procedures and may have been politically motivated. The document was written at the request of current CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
Following the report's release, Ratcliffe claimed on the social media site X (formerly Twitter) that the report had been produced through a "corrupt and politically charged process" that he believed involved senior members of the intelligence community, including Brennan and Comey.
