The Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan warned residents and visitors of the country about the upcoming sharp increase in air temperature and possible mudflows caused by the intensive melting of glaciers. This was reported by the press service of the committee, citing data from the Hydrometeorology Agency of Tajikistan.
According to the forecast, from July 4 to 7, the country is expected to see the arrival of hot and dry air masses from the southwestern regions, which will lead to abnormal heat. Daytime temperatures in the valleys of various regions will reach:
Khatlon region – from +42° to +47°;
Districts of Republican Subordination (DRS) — from +39° to +44°;
Sogd region – from +38° to +43°;
Foothill areas – from +35° to +40°;
Mountainous regions – from +34° to +39°, while in the Darvaz region the temperature can rise to +42°.
Due to prolonged heat and accelerated melting of snow cover and glaciers in the western regions of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, foothill and mountainous regions of the Sughd Region, as well as in the mountainous regions of the RRS, there remains a high risk of mudflows. These processes can lead to an increase in the water level in rivers and cause flooding.
The Committee calls on the population to promptly clear riverbeds, irrigation ditches and drainage channels of debris, vegetation, sand and gravel in order to ensure unimpeded water flow and prevent water flows from overflowing their banks, which will help avoid flooding of residential buildings and commercial facilities.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation and are ready to respond promptly to possible emergencies.
