A press tour for journalists from Central Asian countries and China was held at the Karazhanbas field in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan. The media representatives got acquainted with the work of the unique desalination plant, which reached full capacity in August 2024 and became the largest project of its kind in the oil fields of Kazakhstan.
The desalination plant, built by CITIC Envirotech, is designed to process formation water extracted together with oil. After multi-stage filtration and demineralization using reverse osmosis, the purified water is used for technical purposes at the field. This allows for a significant reduction in the consumption of fresh water from the Volga River, which in turn frees up significant volumes of water for the needs of the region's population.

From the moment of launch in test mode until reaching full capacity, the plant desalinated more than 6.4 million cubic meters of water. The design capacity of the enterprise is 17 thousand cubic meters of purified water per day with the processing of 42.5 thousand cubic meters of formation water. The area of the facility is 36 thousand square meters. During the tour, journalists were shown the entire technological cycle of water purification, including settling tanks, a flotation unit, medium and fine filters, an ultrafiltration unit and a reverse osmosis unit.

Particular attention was paid to the environmental friendliness of the process – all stages of purification are aimed at minimizing the impact on the environment. Representatives of the plant emphasized that the use of advanced technologies allows not only to effectively purify water, but also to reduce the costs of oil production, as well as to create new jobs for the local population.
The project was implemented within the framework of the One Belt, One Road initiative and is included in the list of 55 joint Chinese-Kazakh industrial and investment cooperation projects. It has become an important step in deepening cooperation between China and Kazakhstan in the field of energy and environmental protection.
The journalists noted the high level of organization of the press tour and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to get acquainted with the work of such a significant facility. They emphasized the importance of such projects for the sustainable development of the region and the preservation of the ecological balance.
