A Youth Council for Central Asian countries will be created, where young people will be able to express their views on water and climate issues. The deadline for applications for participation in the Council is June 15, 2025. This was announced on May 29 during the Children and Youth Forum dedicated to the preservation of glaciers ("Empowering future generations: voices for glaciers and climate action"), by the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Tajikistan Raimundas Karoblis, NIAT "Khovar" reports.
During the Forum, the Head of the EU Delegation to Tajikistan emphasized that a significant part of the country's population consists of teenagers and young people aged 10 to 24 years.
"The young generation of the 21st century, the century of information technology, has mastered science and technology. That is why it is capable of becoming the engine of serious changes in the water and climate agenda. The European Union supports such youth initiatives in Tajikistan," the Ambassador said.
He also particularly noted that in Tajikistan, water and glaciers are vitally important. Glaciers are sources of water for agriculture, drinking water supply and energy.
"This topic is of great concern to us, as climate change threatens to accelerate the melting of glaciers. This process affects not only the present, but also the future, the youth themselves. Water shortages can lead to problems in the agricultural and industrial sectors, as well as an outbreak of various diseases. Therefore, we need to act now – prepare, anticipate and prevent the consequences," Raimundas Karoblis emphasized.
