American entrepreneur Elon Musk announced that he is leaving his post as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce costs, Interfax reports.
"As my time as a special government employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending," Musk wrote on social media platform X.
"DOGE's mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life for the entire government," he added.
Meanwhile, a White House spokesman told CNN that Musk would begin the resignation process on Thursday evening.
The entrepreneur announced his decision a day after criticizing Trump's flagship budget bill, saying it undermines the Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) efforts to cut spending.
In an interview with CBS, Musk said he was disappointed by the bill's "massive spending that increases the U.S. budget deficit and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing."
The US House of Representatives last week approved Trump's proposed budget, which includes tax cuts and spending increases, including defense spending, by a vote of 215-214. It now goes to the Senate.
Trump calls the bill "big and beautiful" and "probably the most significant" in U.S. history, but he had to persuade several Republicans in Congress to support the budget, the Financial Times reported.
