In the state of Arkansas, USA, in the national park Crater of Diamonds, tourists themselves look for jewelry – and luck here can be quite real, reports Tengri Travel.
In 2023 alone, more than 700 diamonds were found here. And one visitor stumbled upon a stone that changed his life.
Diamonds are lying right under your feet The park is located on the site of an ancient volcanic crater near the town of Murfreesboro. This is the only place in the world where anyone can search for real diamonds – and take what they find. Since the park opened in 1972, more than 35,000 diamonds have been found here.
One of the latest spectacular cases occurred in April: American David DeCook noticed a sparkle on the ground – at first he thought it was a candy wrapper. But it turned out to be a brown diamond weighing 3.81 carats, which could be worth thousands of dollars.
Earlier, luck smiled on Jerry Evans, who found a nearly colorless diamond weighing 4.87 carats during his first visit to the park. At first, he mistook the stone for a piece of glass and simply threw it in his pocket. Only at home did he send the find for examination – and was shocked by the result.
What else can you find there? In addition to diamonds, amethysts, garnets, jasper, agate, quartz and other minerals are often found in the park. Visitors can bring their own tools or rent them on site. Mining is done in three ways: walking on the surface, washing with water and dry sifting. Anything found can be taken away with you.
The park employs specialists who inspect and register finds free of charge.
The largest diamond in the United States found in this park weighed 40.23 carats and was nicknamed "Uncle Sam."
A diamond hunt ticket costs $15 for adults and $7 for children.
