The foreign ministers of France, Germany and Britain may meet with their Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Geneva on Friday , The Guardian reported on Thursday, noting that the talks could be the first high-level diplomatic contact involving Iran since the start of a new round of escalation in the Middle East.
As the publication points out, the meeting may mark a possible breakthrough after five days of Israeli bombing of Iranian territory. At the same time, it is emphasized that official Tehran has not yet given its final consent to participate in the negotiations.
Iran has refrained from engaging with Western officials since the conflict erupted last week, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier saying he would not negotiate with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff until Israeli airstrikes cease.
According to The Guardian , on the eve of the meeting in Geneva, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy will hold talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Despite criticism of Tehran in a number of EU countries, European diplomats continue to insist on the need to find a peaceful solution and de-escalate tensions in the region.
