The Legendary History of Cartier
The Legendary History of CartierCartier is one of the most prestigious and historic luxury brands in the world, renowned for its fine jewellery, watches and accessories. In 1847, Louis-François Cartier took over his master's workshop in Paris, marking the birth of Cartier. Initially known as a fine jewellery maker, Cartier became distinguished for its exquisite craftsmanship and unique designs. The brand quickly became popular among the French aristocracy for its bespoke pieces, and in 1859, the first boutique opened at 31 rue Montorgueil in Paris.

Throughout the brand’s history, new models have appeared, old ones have been reinterpreted, but the cultural tradition of centuries has always been preserved. In 2014, Cartier participates in an exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris, showcasing its rich history and craftsmanship. In 2018, the reimagined Santos de Cartier collection is launched, combining tradition and modern watchmaking technology. In 2020, innovation continues with collections such as Clash de Cartier and new versions of the Tank and Ballon Bleu watches. Sustainable development efforts are also evolving. A commitment to responsible sourcing of gold and diamonds, strengthening the brand’s ethics.

Cartier. Le style et l'histoire, presented in the prestigious Salon d'Honneur of the Grand Palais, is the first exhibition of this scale in Paris since the Cartier retrospective at the Petit Palais in 1989. Commissioned by the Réunion des Musées Nationales – Grand Palais, the exhibition explores Cartier's role in the history of style and decorative arts from the Maison's foundation in 1847 to the mid-1970s.
The exhibition features more than 600 extraordinary pieces, displayed side by side for the first time. Most of them are from the Cartier collection or have been loaned by individuals, institutions and museum collections from France and around the world. Together, they bear witness to the rich and complex history of the Jeweler of Kings and the King of Jewelers.
Cartier’s creative genius and artistic ability are presented in a new light under the innovative curation of Laurent Salomé, RMN’s Curatorial Director, and his assistant Laure Dalone. Salomé and Dalone approached the exhibition as an art history project, carefully selecting each piece of jewelry, precious accessory, and watch to be displayed.
