The Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan has issued an official warning in connection with expected adverse weather conditions that could cause natural disasters.
As reported by the department with reference to the Agency for Hydrometeorology, heavy rainfall is forecast in the mountainous and foothill regions of the republican subordination, Sughd region and some western regions of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region on May 22 and 23. There are real risks of mudflows and other flood phenomena.
In addition, on May 23-24 in the districts of Khatlon region, RRS, in the city of Dushanbe, and on May 23 in Sughd region, a sharp deterioration in the quality of atmospheric air is possible. According to weather forecasters, this is due to the influx of dusty air masses from the southwest and northwest. On these days, there may be an excess of permissible concentrations of solid particles of 10 microns (PM-10) and 2.5 microns (PM-2.5), which is especially dangerous for people with chronic diseases of the respiratory system and cardiovascular system.
The Emergency Situations Committee strongly recommends that residents clear drainage channels, irrigation ditches and mudflow channels of debris and other obstacles in advance. The population is also advised to refrain from going to mountainous areas to collect medicinal plants, not to go near the banks of reservoirs for fishing and to temporarily limit grazing of livestock.
The need for increased supervision of children due to the increased danger is particularly emphasized.
