A suspect in the murder of two employees of the Israeli embassy has been detained in Washington. This is 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago. He had not previously come to the attention of the police, District of Columbia Police Chief Pamela Smith said at a briefing, Interfax reports with reference to ABC News.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunman did not try to leave and waited for the police to arrive. According to Smith, he entered the Jewish Museum building, where the embassy staff were killed, and was detained by security. After being detained, he shouted slogans such as "Free Palestine" and explained that he "did it for Gaza."
The embassy staff were killed as they left the museum after an event they were attending. According to witnesses, the suspect, who had been nearby for some time, approached a group of four people and began shooting. The head of the diplomatic mission, Yechiel Leiter, told a press conference that the man and woman were preparing to get engaged the following week and the groom had already bought a ring.
Police believe Rodriguez acted alone. After he was handcuffed, he told them where he had left his gun. Police found the weapon.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser told reporters there was no risk of another attack.
