As part of the International Conference on Glacier Conservation, a “Glacier Eco-Race” will be organized on June 1 of this year in the Safed-Dara ski resort, NIAT Khovar reports with reference to the Conference Secretariat.
The event aims to draw attention to the issues of climate change, environmental protection and the rapid melting of glaciers, which is of great importance for the water resources of Tajikistan and the region as a whole.
The race will feature a special guest, Caroline Gleich, a world-renowned climate activist and professional ski mountaineer.
The race will take place along the picturesque routes of Safed-Dary, located 50 km from Dushanbe at an altitude of 1600 meters above sea level.
Participants can expect clean mountain air, bright sunny weather and inspiring landscapes.
Race categories include:
Mountain Challenge – 5 km: route with an altitude gain from 2200 m to 2900 m;
Ekiden (relay race) – 5 km: a team of 4 people, each covers 1250 m;
Ice Mile – 1600m: A flat route across a plateau at an altitude of 2200m.
The event will last 7-8 hours, including the start, award ceremony and outdoor lunch. The race is open to everyone, but participants must be in good physical condition and sign a personal liability release before the event.
The meeting place for participants is at 07:00 on the square near the Tajik State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Sadriddin Aini in Dushanbe.
The organisers emphasise that holding the race as part of the conference has an important symbolic meaning and is intended to unite the efforts of the international community in matters of preserving glaciers and sustainable development of mountainous areas.
