US President Donald Trump declared May 8 as Victory Day of the United States of America in World War II. He stated this in his address published as part of the election campaign.
"Many of our allies and friends celebrate May 8 as Victory Day, but it was the United States that did more than anyone else to achieve that victory. I proclaim May 8 as Victory Day for the United States in World War II, and November 11 as Victory Day in World War I," the American leader emphasized.
According to him, the United States won both world wars through strength, courage and outstanding military skill. “No one came close. But today, we hardly celebrate these historic achievements — because we no longer have leaders who know how to do it. We are going to start celebrating our victories again!” Trump added.
In most European countries, May 8 is celebrated as Victory Day over Nazism. In the United States, November 11 is traditionally considered Veterans Day, marking the end of World War I in 1918.
