The Second National Consultative Meeting on the project “Adaptation of Mammals to Climate Change in Central Asia” was held in Dushanbe. This was reported by the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The event took place on June 30 with the participation of international experts and representatives of relevant government agencies from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The meeting became part of a multilateral project implemented since 2022 with the support of international environmental organizations.
As reported by the Committee, the project is aimed at adapting key mammal species to climate change, as well as reducing conflicts between wildlife and local populations. Participants discussed current results of field research, issues of monitoring, ecosystem sustainability and participation of local communities in preserving natural heritage.
The aim of the project is to preserve six rare species of mammals living in the territory of three Central Asian states: argali (wild mountain sheep); Bukhara deer; snow leopard; ibex; markhor (markhorn goat) and brown bear.
The Committee for Environmental Protection emphasized that work in this direction is being carried out within the framework of the implementation of the environmental policy of the Government of Tajikistan, aimed at protecting specially protected natural areas and preserving biological diversity.
The meeting also discussed proposals to improve transboundary cooperation, exchange scientific information and attract international support for sustainable management of natural resources.
