Recently, 100,000 roses bloomed in the Taklamakan Desert. This sea of flowers was planted in Yutian County of Xinjiang last year as a protection measure. The "green belt" in the desert is surrounded by roses, People's Daily reports.
Planting roses in the desert has not only aesthetic value, but also scientific justification. The desert roses in Yutian County are densely planted, and when they grow, their lush branches and leaves effectively block the wind and sand, their roots can also stabilize the sand, which is extremely beneficial to improving the ecological environment of the desert.

However, growing good roses is not easy. There is very little rainfall, there are not enough water resources, and frequent sandstorms can destroy the plants in severe cases. There was a case where a strong wind brought sand and completely buried a third of the rose seedlings. Since then, researchers have conducted many experiments and improved the method. Despite the harsh natural conditions, locals were eventually able to grow roses.
The Taklamakan Desert is the largest mobile desert in China and the second largest in the world. According to available data, up to the end of 2024, 505,200 mu (33,680 hectares) of grass nets have been installed in the Taklamakan Desert, 17.2548 million mu (115 hectares) of artificial forestation have been carried out, and about 2 billion trees have been planted.
