US intelligence has informed senators that its previous findings that Iran is not working to develop nuclear weapons have been confirmed, The Guardian reports, Interfax reports.
"Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner said that on Monday, after Israel's attack on Iran, senators were informed that U.S. intelligence agencies still see no evidence that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon," the publication says.
In an interview with MSNBC, Warner said Trump's Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard informed the Senate back in March that "Iran is not taking any steps toward building a bomb."
"And we got confirmation (…). On Monday of this week, it became known that the intelligence had not changed," the senator added.
The Guardian notes that President Donald Trump was reminded of Gabbard's testimony on Tuesday, to which he responded: "I don't care what she said, I think they were very close to making it (nuclear weapons – IF)."
Warner responded: "Then the president is essentially rejecting all intelligence. I have no idea what U.S. policy is on this right now. I'm the vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee, but if I have no idea, what do the American people know?"
