Iran has expressed its willingness to sign an international agreement to ensure it does not have nuclear weapons, but has rejected the possibility of making concessions on its legitimate right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said at a meeting with foreign diplomats broadcast on Iranian television.
“We are ready for any agreement that aims to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, since, according to our principle, such weapons are prohibited,” the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized.
At the same time, he noted that the authorities of the Islamic Republic will not accept conditions aimed at limiting its legal rights in the peaceful nuclear energy sector.
“If the goal of the agreement is to deprive Iran of its nuclear rights, then we are not ready for such an agreement,” the minister added.
Araghchi recalled that the country's nuclear program is exclusively peaceful in nature, and Iran continues to comply with its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
