The Russian leader will always want more, says Kurt Volker, the former special representative of the State Department for Ukraine. He believes that Putin will never agree to a peace agreement to end the war against Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will never agree to a peace deal , so the world must continue to insist on a ceasefire in Ukraine, said Kurt Volker, former US State Department Special Representative for Ukraine and a distinguished fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis.
"I think we should continue to insist on a ceasefire. I think it is realistic. And if we introduce secondary sanctions, reduce oil prices, then this will affect Putin's finances and he will be forced to agree to a ceasefire. Therefore, we should continue to insist on this. Putin will never agree to a peace agreement, because he will never be satisfied and will always want more," he emphasized in an interview with Glavkom .
According to Volker, eventually it will be possible to reach a "ceasefire and containment." Ukraine will receive security guarantees, will restore its economy. The country will also have support from Europe and will move towards membership in the European Union.
"The challenge will be to make Ukraine stronger and more resilient as quickly as possible. And we must do everything to deter future Russian attacks. But in my opinion, we will never have a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia," Volker added.
At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine should not recognize the occupation of any part of its territory by Russia.
"I see a very long-term confrontation that cannot be resolved militarily, but the Russian occupation will also never be recognized as legitimate," he stated.
