Former England football captain David Beckham is to be knighted, sources have told the BBC. His name will be included in the official list of people to receive honours to mark King Charles III's birthday, the BBC reports.
Once Beckham is knighted, his official title will become "Sir" and his wife, the former Spice Girls singer, will thus become "Lady Victoria."
In 2003, Beckham received an OBE for services to sport. The award was presented to him by Queen Elizabeth II.
50-year-old David Beckham is one of the most decorated British footballers and the main football star of his generation. He played for the England national team from 1996 to 2009: he appeared on the field 115 times and scored 17 goals.
He also played for Manchester United, Preston North End, Real Madrid, Milan, Los Angeles Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain.
Beckham played 398 times for Manchester United, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
In 2003, Beckham moved to Real Madrid, from where he moved to California in 2007, where he played for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
He ended his professional football career in 2013.
Beckham's candidacy for a knighthood was reportedly considered back in 2011.
In 2017, several British newspapers published excerpts from the footballer's personal correspondence, in which Beckham, among other things, criticized the British system of royal awards. At that time, Beckham's representatives stated that the letters were forged.
Beckham played a significant role in helping London win the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games. He has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2005.
In 2024, Beckham was appointed an ambassador for the King's Foundation, which offers educational courses for students.
