On May 29, a forum entitled “Agriculture in the Age of Melting Glaciers: Combating Droughts and Floods through Carbon Sequestration and Building Resilience in Glacier-Dependent Regions” will be held in Dushanbe, NIAT Khovar reports, citing the Conference Secretariat.
The forum is held within the framework of the International High-Level Conference on Glacier Conservation and is dedicated to the International Year of Glacier Conservation (2025). The forum will be attended by experts, domestic and foreign representatives, both online and in person.
The forum is expected to discuss key water and climate adaptation strategies in agriculture and food systems, best practices and innovations in Central Asia, as well as the role of water, land and climate resources in the transformation of agricultural and food systems and climate change issues.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, more than 50 percent of glaciers in Central Asia could disappear by 2050, threatening the water and food security of more than 64 million people in the region. With glaciers retreating and snow cover decreasing, access to water is expected to become even more difficult and competition for water more intense. This will impact communities that rely on glacier water. Changes in the rate of glacier and snow melt affect the timing and volume of water flows, reducing the availability of water for agriculture in both mountain and lowland areas.
Let us recall that from May 29 to 31, the Republic of Tajikistan is hosting the International High-Level Conference on Glacier Conservation, which is being held within the framework of the International Year of Glacier Conservation, initiated by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon. This initiative was supported by more than 150 member states of the United Nations and approved by the resolution of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in December 2022.
