The President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Celeste Saul, who arrived in Dushanbe to participate in the first International High-Level Conference on Glacier Conservation. This was reported by the press service of the head of state.
During the talks, the parties discussed key issues of bilateral cooperation, in particular in the field of climatology and water resources protection, as well as the agenda of the upcoming conference dedicated to the preservation of glaciers as the most important element of the cryosphere.
President Emomali Rahmon thanked Ms. Saula for her participation in the forum and expressed appreciation to WMO for its consistent support of Tajikistan’s international initiatives, including in the field of water diplomacy and sustainable management of natural resources.

The WMO Secretary-General, in turn, highly appreciated Tajikistan’s leadership role in advancing the global climate agenda and emphasized the importance of Dushanbe’s proposals to create international mechanisms in the field of cryospheric sciences.
In particular, the initiative to establish a Regional Coordination Centre for Glacier Studies in Dushanbe under the auspices of WMO, with the participation of international partners and the scientific community, was supported. It is expected that the centre will become an important platform for monitoring the state of glaciers and exchanging scientific data in Central Asia.
The parties also discussed the joint initiative of Tajikistan and France to declare 2025–2034 the “Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences,” emphasizing its relevance in the context of accelerating glacier melting and growing climate threats.
At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed their readiness to further expand cooperation and agreed on the importance of coordinating efforts to combat climate change and preserve the planet’s water resources.
