The State Scientific Institution "Center for the Study of Glaciers" of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan has commissioned the country's first laboratory of the glacier information system. This was reported by NIAT "Khovar" with reference to the press service of the Center for the Study of Glaciers.
As specified by the department, the opening of the laboratory was a significant step in the development of the republic's scientific infrastructure. It will collect, analyze and model data on glaciers using the latest technologies, including laser scanning and satellite monitoring.
"The use of modern methods of analysis and high-precision satellite images will allow us to obtain reliable data on the area, volume and dynamics of glaciers. This will expand the possibilities of monitoring and increase the accuracy of forecasting changes in glacial masses," said one of the Center's research associates.
The laboratory will pay special attention to glacial lakes, since their changes are directly related to the melting processes of glaciers and may pose a threat to adjacent territories. According to scientists, modeling these processes will help to promptly identify risks and develop effective measures to protect the environment and life-support systems.
The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Kobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, as well as leading scientists and specialists.

The opening of the laboratory was implemented within the framework of the action plan to implement the instructions of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and the Government Resolution of August 31, 2023, concerning the implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution on the proclamation of the International Year of Glacier Conservation and the preparation of the High-Level International Conference on this topic.
Experts emphasize that the new scientific facility will provide Tajik researchers with access to advanced tools and methods, which will improve the quality of research and strengthen Tajikistan’s contribution to international efforts to combat climate change.
