Swiss court upholds Russia's stripping of first place in Sochi Olympic medal count

The Swiss Federal Court has rejected the appeals of Russian biathlete Evgeny Ustyugov against the stripping of his 2010 and 2014 Olympic medals for violating anti-doping rules. The decision is final – all of the athlete’s results from January 24, 2010 until the end of the 2013/2014 season have been annulled.

The basis for the punishment was data from the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory and deviations in the athlete's biological passport. In connection with this, Ustyugov's medals were annulled – gold in the mass start and bronze in the men's relay at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, as well as gold in the Russian national relay at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Following the redistribution of awards, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will officially remove Russia from first place in the medal standings of the 2014 Winter Games, handing the leadership to the Norwegian team.

The Sochi Winter Olympic Games were held from 7 to 23 February 2014. A total of 2,876 athletes from 88 countries took part. The Russian team, which included 241 athletes, competed in 95 of the 98 events and finished the competition in first place in the medal standings, winning 33 medals: 13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze. However, after the court's decision, the final medal standings changed.
