Azerbaijani company ADOG and the international port of Zira have come up with an initiative to build an underground tunnel that will connect the Caspian and Black Seas, Tengrinews.kz reports with reference to Minval.az.
According to the project, it is proposed to build an underground tunnel with a diameter of 10 meters, which will connect the Black Sea (from the Georgian or Russian side) with the Caspian Sea. Due to the natural difference in water levels, water from the Black Sea will be able to flow by gravity into the Caspian Sea, without the use of pumps.
"The initiative is aimed at stabilizing the water balance of the Caspian Sea, the level of which has been rapidly declining in recent years, which poses serious environmental, economic and infrastructural risks for the coastal states," the publication says.
The company emphasized that the project will be implemented with full environmental monitoring and measures to preserve biodiversity. ADOG is ready to begin preparing a feasibility study and mobilize the necessary resources.
The authors of the appeal ask that the proposal be considered at the state level and that the authorized bodies be instructed to conduct preliminary consultations.
In July 2024, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at an informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States, called for uniting to solve the environmental problems of the Caspian and Aral Seas.
In February 2025, experts said the Caspian Sea level was falling at an unprecedented rate – minus 2 meters over the past 20 years.
