On April 29, 2025, the Minister of Transport of Tajikistan Azim Ibrohim met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Pakistan to Tajikistan Muhammad Saeed Sarwar. During the meeting, the parties discussed the practical implementation of previously reached agreements in the field of road transport and transit trade, the press service of the department reported.
The agreement on international road transport between the governments of the two countries was signed during the official visit of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to Pakistan on June 2, 2021. An agreement on transit trade was also signed in 2022. The President of Tajikistan emphasized the importance of the country's access to Pakistan's seaports such as Karachi and Gwadar to expand economic ties and improve transport routes.
“In the area of transport, we once again emphasized our readiness to expand cooperation, including from the point of view of Tajikistan’s access to the sea ports of Karachi and Gwadar in Pakistan,” said then President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon in his speech following his visit to Islamabad.
On April 1, 2024, a ceremony was held in Dushanbe to receive the first consignment of cargo under the signed agreement on transit trade. The Minister and the Ambassador discussed the acceleration of the implementation of the agreements, as well as the importance of developing and constructing new transport corridors to access Pakistan's seaports.
The meeting took place in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.
